Diagnostic Neuroradiology
Diagnostic Neuroradiology is a subspecialty of Radiology that is devoted to the imaging of the central nervous system (the brain, spine, nerves, head and neck). Imaging modalities used in neuroradiology include magnetic resonance imaging MRI, CT scan, diagnostic angiography and myelography.
The department of neuroradiology at NASA Hospitals is equipped with:
3 Tesla, Fully Digital MRI Scanner – A fully digital high-field MRI system with high performance gradient systems (amongst the most powerful and advanced units in the world). The unit provides exceptional image quality with shorter scan duration. The wide bore of the MRI unit as well as the interiors of the MRI room have been modelled to reduce patient anxiety and claustrophobia. The system has advanced imaging protocols to facilitate accurate diagnosis in neuro, cardiac, musculoskeletal and body imaging.
The system, which has several cutting edge technologies such as – Ultrafast imaging protocols, Motion correction techniques that allow imaging of irritable and uncooperative patients, brain diffusion and perfusion studies, Arterial spin labelling, Functional MRI, MR spectroscopy, Diffusion tensor imaging, Whole body diffusion studies, Advanced cardiac imaging applications include myocardial perfusion and viability studies and Non-contrast MR Angiography.

MULTIDETECTOR CT SCANNER
Ensures maximum acquisition efficiency, providing speed, resolution, image quality, and extended coverage with minimum possible radiation exposure. It has optimized application protocols for brain and spine imaging in uncooperative patients, high-resolution 3D imaging of small structures, CT scan of joints, CT Angiography, perfusion imaging, and CT-guided interventional procedures.
COLOUR DOPPLER UNITS
Most sophisticated Colour Doppler Systems with lightweight probes for Radiology, Vascular, Neuro, and Cardiac applications. The system gives high-resolution images in any plane to reveal the smallest details with stunning clarity.
COMPUTED RADIOGRAPHY
Renders high-resolution radiographs with superior time efficiency. As no repetition and digital enhancement are required, rapid transfer of images for immediate investigation by physicians is made possible through integration with PACS.
PICTURE ARCHIVAL & COMMUNICATION SYSTEM (PACS)
There is a local network connecting all imaging modalities like CR, CT, MRI, and Cath lab to a common workstation. This facilitates faster transfer of the images to the radiologist’s and clinician’s desktop computer. This allows faster and more efficient reporting, quicker clinical decisions, and has drastically improved the way patients receive healthcare at NASA Hospitals.

Neurointerventions
Interventional Neuroradiology
Interventional neuroradiology is an evolving specialty for minimally invasive treatment of abnormalities of the blood vessels in the brain and spine. Using advanced cross-sectional and three dimensional imaging, these procedures show great promise for improved diagnosis and clinical outcomes.
HOW ARE THESE PROCEDURES PERFORMED
Under appropriate anesthesia, a tiny, tube-like catheter is inserted into one of the limb arteries (usually in the right groin region). Using x-ray guidance, this catheter is negotiated through the vascular tree of the body, into the vessels supplying the brain and spine. Through this, a dye can be introduced into the blood vessels, and its flow can be documented, to accurately diagnose abnormalities of the target organ vessels. A wide range of specialized equipment can be introduced into the circulation in this fashion, to repair the abnormal blood vessels.
Using these techniques, diagnosis and treatment of the full range of vascular stroke disorders is also made possible. These include intraarterial thrombolysis for stroke, coil embolization of aneurysms, embolization of arterio-venous malformations and arterio-venous fistulae, and preoperative embolization of tumors in the neck and brain. To treat vascular stenosis and blockages, angioplasty and/or stenting of the carotid arteries, vertebral arteries, and intracranial arteries are offered. Emergency treatment of epistaxis (nosebleed) and head and neck vascular injuries is also available. Treatment of vertebral compression fractures (vertebroplasty) is offered, which can dramatically improve a patient’s comfort and level of activity. Other spine maladies are treated with epidural steroid injections, sacroiliac joint injections, facet joint injections, and selective nerve root blocks.
BENEFITS OF INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY
Interventional neuroradiology techniques often allow us access to areas of the brain and spine that are surgically difficult to reach. Because the procedures are minimally invasive, hospital stays and recovery periods are normally shorter. In many cases, they also pose a lower risk for complications and infection.
The department of neuroradiology at NASA Hospitals is equipped with an Advanced neurointerventional suite with 3D rotational angiography. This system enables digital subtraction angiography which permits clear visualization of brain, spine and coronary blood vessels without interference from bony or dense soft tissue environment.
3D rotational angiography provides an image of a particular vessel while the camera rotates around the patient in a predefined arc, enabling viewing of the structure from multiple angles with a single injection of contrast medium. It gives exquisitely detailed 3 Dimensional visualization of the blood vessels, thereby enabling faster and more accurate clinical decisions while treating complex abnormalities of the blood vessels.
